Valentine’s Day special at HEART

Two local lads with a shared passion for music will be appearing on Valentine’s Day at the Margaret River HEART. Between them, Scott Wise and Ian Parmenter have more than a century’s love of music, Scott beginning in WA and Ian in London.

First on the scene at the end of WWII, Ian grew to love American folk and blues music. Living in Notting Hill Gate in his early twenties, he was inspired by the great visiting American blues harmonica players to take up the instrument himself.

He formed a blues and bluegrass trio with his brother on guitar and vocals, and a friend on double-bass. Fortunately, they kept their day jobs, though they did play major national folk festivals and clubs.

Scott on the other hand, has been a professional musician since 1971 – the year Ian arrived in WA – as well as working in stringed instrument repair since that time. He set up his own instrument making business in Perth in late 1978, and since then has built some 700 guitars, mandolins, ukuleles, violins, and basses, the majority in his Margaret River workshop.

The two have known each other for 40 years from when they were neighbours in Fremantle, and Ian would often join Scott when he was performing with either the Wise Family Band or the Ten Cent Shooters. As with so many people involved in the Arts in Fremantle, they both migrated South.

During the Valentine’s Day morning’s Young@HEART session, they’ll tell tales and perform songs – along with musician and singer Brandie Kate.

Young@HEART is a free community performance program at HEART every Monday morning. Doors open at 9am, performance starts at 10am and it’s free to all ages.

Plus, there’s a bonus. To follow the gig, A special Valentine’s Day lunch over the road at The River, featuring a three-course meal prepared by chef legend Hamish McLeay including WA truffles. “Truffles with Love” is a three-course meal for $75, and there’ll be a 10% discount for any HEART-goers.
