Tall tales from Canterbury

Bare Naked Theatre Company is bringing its successful comedy series The Canterbury Tales to the Margaret River HEART on Friday 23 October 2020.

Five of Geoffrey Chaucer’s original tales will be told in five completely different genres – The Wild West, Melodrama, Shakespeare, Silent Movie and Star Trek.

Margaret River HEART General Manager Nicky Hansen said the show was recently a hit in Busselton and has been toured successfully around Western Australia, as far as Esperance.

“It’s a great opportunity to share the show with folk here in Margaret River”, Ms Hansen said.

“Plus, it’s always a bonus when we’ve got local talent on stage.”

The Canterbury Tales Director Stephen Lee said while the language is updated, the details of each story are still completely faithful to Chaucer’s own plot lines.

“Sometimes even so far as to use an exact word-for-word modernisation of his original”, Mr Lee said.

“Whenever I told anyone I was attempting a production of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, the usual response was pretty much always, why?

“To many people Shakespeare is already totally old-fashioned and impossible to understand, but I was attempting it because English has such an amazing literature and it seems a shame to ignore superb works just because they are old.

“Chaucer is an amazing storyteller and if we can open even one person’s eyes to go back and read the original then it will be totally worthwhile.”
