Volunteering with HEART

Over 40 community members attended a Volunteer Information and Induction Sundowner at the Margaret River HEART on Tuesday evening.

HEART volunteers will participate in many activities from cinema ushering through to ticket scanning and light office duties.

Margaret River HEART General Manager Nicky Hansen said she was delighted with the response.

“Our future volunteers have a passion for events, and really want to help us with our quest to support local artists and bring world class events to our region”, she said.

Local artist Britta Sorenson’s artwork, ‘Why do we volunteer?’, has been chosen to hang in the HEART Bar Gallery to symbolise the importance of volunteering within the community.

The wall-hanging features prepared pieces of locally reclaimed work wear with hand written personal reasons for volunteering.

“Denim, as an egalitarian fabric worn my many, was chosen to symbolise the tough work of volunteering”, Ms Hansen said.

The piece was created as part of the ‘Thank a Volunteer Day’ initiative in 2019, where Ms Sorensen was commissioned to facilitate a participatory creative process, resulting in the artwork being displayed at community facilities and events.

“It’s a homage to the many volunteers who helped build the arts community in the Margaret River Region.

“Also, to the volunteers who have, are, and will in future assist with operations at our Hub of Entertainment, Arts and Regional Tourism – that is, our Margaret River HEART.”

Many HEART volunteers will be involved with ushering duties during the school holiday cinema schedule, which will be announced in the coming weeks.
